Glossary
Field survey, exploratory phase: The goal of the exploratory phase is to understand the landscape features that shaped past choices for settlement locations. This phase focuses on ruling out less promising areas and identifying the most likely zones for further investigation.
Field survey, mapping phase: The collection of archaeological and geological data in the field, aimed at establishing the presence of archaeological sites within a research area.
Field survey, valuation phase: The collection of archaeological and geological data in the field aimed at (further) determining the site characteristics such as location, nature, depth, extent, and dating of the archaeological remains.
Field vector: A vector that represents the direction and strength of the magnetic field at a specific location. In magnetometry, the field vector is used to measure variations in the magnetic field, aiding in the detection of subsurface structures or objects.
Frequency: The number of times the waveform of electromagnetic radiation completes a full cycle within a specific period of time. It is measured in Hertz (Hz) and indicates how often the waves oscillate or vibrate per second. Higher frequencies indicate more vibrations per second and shorter wavelengths, whereas lower frequencies have fewer vibrations and longer wavelengths.
